ORCA screen reader, discovery

Enable ORCA : Launch ORCA by doing : : CTRL + SHIFT + O
Disable ORCA : To disable ORCA, do it again : CTRL + SHIFT + O
Warning : do not do repeated activation-deactivations.

ORCA, make him mute

To disable ORCA, press : INSERT + S.
Repeat INSERT + S to reactivate ORCA.

If you hear two voices, press the key : CTRL

ORCA voice flow, pitch, volume :
Make Insert + Space to go to Orca’s preferences.
And there, choose the tab : voice

ORCA autostart :

Press CTRL + WIN + 4 to go to the ORCA menu.
And go down to the 2nd line : Configuration of Orca autostart.

Change the voice to ORCA, male voice or female voice :

Press CTRL + WIN + 4 to go to the ORCA menu.
And down to the third line : Change the voice.

Speed

Increase the reading rate : INSERT + CTRL + 9 of the disabled numeric keypad.
Decrease the reading rate : INSERT + CTRL + 3 of the disabled numeric keypad.

ORCA, read on the internet

Check that ORCA is running (just press a key on the keyboard).
If it is not started, do : CTRL + SHIFT + O but do not do it repeatedly.
Check that the Speaker is active.

First switch to playback mode, if possible, by doing : CTRL + ALT + R and Tabulate once

To read with ORCA :

- disable the numeric keypad (we hear : Num Lock Disabled).
- press the PLUS key on the disabled numeric keypad once.
Stop playback with : CTRL - Resume playback with : MORE

Go back to the text with : Up arrow, ORCA then reads the line
o down in the text with Down Arrow, ORCA then reads the line

Increase reading rate : INSERT + CTRL + 9 of the numeric keypad disabled.
Decrease reading rate : INSERT + CTRL + 3 of the keypad disabled.

Search in the text : CTRL + F. The following occurrences can be found by pressing the key : F3

ORCA, read a txt document

Check that ORCA is running (just press a key on the keyboard).
If it is not started, do : CTRL + SHIFT + O but do not do it repeatedly.
Check that the Speaker is active.
For a successful reading, please follow the procedure below.

First you have to open the Mousepad software.

1 - Run : WIN + R to open the list of applications and type : mousepad.
2 - Confirm with Enter.
3 - Do : ALT + F to reach the menu : File
4 - With Down Arrow, scroll down to the line : "Open". Confirm with Enter.
5 - Browse folders and files until you hear the document you are looking for.
6 - Confirm with Enter.
7 - Disable the numeric keypad and press the Plus key on this numeric keypad.

Stop playback with : CTRL - Resume playback with : MORE

Go back to the text with : Up arrow, ORCA then reads the line.
Scroll down into the text with : Down Arrow, ORCA then reads the line.

Increase reading rate : INSERT + CTRL + 9 of the numeric keypad disablReading speeded.
Decrease reading rate : INSERT + CTRL + 3 of the keypad disabled.

Search in the text by doing : CTRL + F . To find the following occurrences, press : F3.


ORCA, read an odt document

Check that ORCA is running (just press a key on the keyboard).
If it is not started, do : CTRL + SHIFT + O but do not do it repeatedly.
Check that the Speaker is active.
For a successful reading, please follow the procedure below.

1 - First you have to launch the LibreOffice Writer software by doing : WIN + ALT + Esperluette
2 - Do : ALT + F to reach the menu : File
3 - With Down Arrow, scroll down to the line : "Open". Confirm with Enter.
4 - Fetch the desired document. Confirm with Enter
5 - Disable the numeric keypad and press the Plus key on this numeric keypad.

Stop playback with : CTRL - Resume playback with : MORE

Go back to the text with : Up arrow, ORCA then reads the line.

Go down in the text with Down Arrow, ORCA then reads the line.

Increase reading rate : INSERT + CTRL + 9 of the numeric keypad disabled.
Decrease reading rate : INSERT + CTRL + 3 of the keypad disabled.

Search in the text : CTRL + F . The following occurrences can be found by doing : F3 .


Read a pdf document with Evince and F7

This is only possible if it is a real pdf and not a pdf-image
First of all, ORCA must be active

1) Open a pdf document with Evince - To do this, right-click (or SHIFT + F10) on the document and choose : open with Evince
2) Press the F7 key. A window opens saying : Do you want to enable cursor navigation ? This feature allows you to place a cursor on the page and select text with the keyboard. Tabulate to the ’Enable’ button or click on this button.
3) The cursor is at the beginning of the first word on the page.
By doing : Right arrow repeatedly, you can read letter by letter.
By doing : CTRL + Right Arrow you can read verbatim.
4) if this reading is not possible, for example for a pdf-image, it is necessary to go through the Reading Machine that you launch with : CTRL + WIN + ALT + Z .


Reading a web page in read or text mode

This works with the Firefox browser

1) Use the playback mode

- launch the ORCA screen reader, then launch a website and an article page.
- do : CTRL + ALT + R and TABLE once.
- Disable the number pad and press the PLUS key while ORCA reads the text.
- you can read word for word with : CTRL + Right or left arrow.
- you can read letter to letter with : Right or left arrow.
- to return to the original page, press : ALT + Left Arrow.

2) Use the Textise mode

To use this method, you must first have installed the extension : Textise.

- launch the ORCA screen reader, then launch a website.
- do : ALT + M to go to the menu : bookmarks
- scroll down with Down Arrow to the line : Textise. Confirm with Enter.
- Deactivate the number pad and press the PLUS key. Then ORCA reads the text.
- you can read word for word with : CTRL + Right or left arrow.
- you can read letter to letter with : Right or left arrow.
- to return to the original page, press : ALT + Left Arrow.

Orca Voice Adjustment

AccessDV Linux uses two tools, Espeak and Orca. Sometimes they talk together. In this case, to cut off a voice, press the CTRL key.

Orca voice, male or female.

Do : CTRL + WIN + 4 of the numeric keypad.
With the Up or Down Arrows, go to the element : Choose a voice for Orca
Confirm with Enter.

Choisir Voix Orca - 1

The choice in the list is made using UP or DOWN Arrow.
Validate with Space.

At the end, TABULATE to the button : Confirm and press the Space key or more directly, press ALT + V .

If you hear :’password field’, enter your password, confirm with Enter.


Flow, pitch, voice volume Orca

Make Insert + Space to go to Orca’s preferences.
Then Right Arrow to go to the tab : Voice

1 - Tabulate to : Flow rate.
Increase the flow rate with Right Arrow. Decrease the flow rate with Left Arrow.
Confirm with Space.

2 - Tabulate to : Height.
A higher voice with Right Arrow. A lower voice with Left Arrow.
Confirm with Space.

3 - Tabulete to : Volume.
Harder with Right Arrow. Slow down with Left Arrow.
Confirm with Space.

At the end, TABulate until you hear : Apply button. Validate with Space
TAB until you hear : Confirm-button. Confirm with Space.

Set the speed provisionally :

Increase the rate : INSERT + CTRL + 9 of the numerical keypad disabled.
Decrease the rate : INSERT + CTRL + 3 of the numerical keypad disabled.

Reading speed

The rate of the Espeak voice can be modified, and the rate of the Orca voice can be modified. Or make a specific modification.

Espeak voice rate :
Do CTRL + WIN + ALT + T
Choose with Right Arrw or Left Arrow.
Confirm the choice with Space.
Tabulate until you hear : press the button. And hit the Space Bar.

Orca voice flow :
Do Insert + Space to go to Orca’s preferences.
Then Right Arrow to go to the tab : Voice
Tabulate to : Flow rate.

Increase the flow rate with Right Arrow. Decrease with Left Arrow.
Confirm with Space.
At the end, TABulate until you hear : Apply button. Validate with Space
TAB until you hear : Confirm-button. Confirm with Space.

Punctual modification of the reading rhythm :

Increase the playback rate with : INSERT + CTRL + 9 on the disabled numeric keypad.

Decrease the playback rate with : INSERT + CTRL + 3 of the disabled numeric keypad.


Orca and cursor navigation

Cursor navigation is a navigation mode using the keyboard. It can be used with Firefox, Thunderbird and Libre Office. He sometimes uses the F7 key.

- CTRL + Right Arrow allows you to read word for word - ORCA reads all words.
- Right Arrow button to read letter to letter. ORCA reads all the letters.

You can also use - CTRL + Left Arrow or Left Arrow only.

With Firefox - it is better to read a simple article :

Put the article in reading mode by doing : CTRL + ALT + R and by TABULATING once.

With Thunderbird :

Cursor navigation can be used to read a received message, or to reread a message we just wrote.

With Libre-Office :

Cursor navigation can be used to read an existing text, or to reread a text that has just been written.

With Evince and a pdf-text :

you must first press the F7 key.
Cursor navigation can be used to read an existing text, but you have to be patient : Orca takes time to analyze the page before launching.


Espeak voice adjustment

AccessDV Linux uses two tools, Espeak and Orca. Sometimes they talk together. In this case, to cut off a voice, press the CTRL key.

Do : CTRL + WIN + ALT + E . You hear : global configuration of the Espeak speech synthesis. The tool guides you step by step.

There you can set :

1 - Adjust the gender of the voice : male or female.
Choose with Down Arrow or Up Arrow.
Confirm the choice with Space.
Tab until you hear : press the button. And hit the Space Bar.

2 - Adjust the voice flow rate : more or less fast.
Choose with Right Arrow or Left Arrow.
Confirm the choice with Space.
Tab until you hear : press the button. And hit the Space Bar.

The software questions you by saying : is that okay with you ? If yes, select the yes button with the TAB key. Otherwise choose the NO button and repeat the setting.

3 - Adjust the pitch of the voice : more or less high-pitched.

Choose with Right Arrow or Left Arrow.
Confirm the choice with Space.
Tab until you hear : press the button. And hit the Space Bar.

The software questions you by saying : is that okay with you ? If yes, select the yes button with the TAB key. Otherwise choose the NO button and repeat the setting.

Set the speed provisionally :

Increase the rate : INSERT + CTRL + 9 of the numerical keypad disabled.
Decrease the rate : INSERT + CTRL + 3 of the numerical keypad disabled.

Si vous avez le lecteur d'écran ORCA sous Linux ou sous AccessDV Linux, accédez aux titres des articles en frappant H ou MAJ + ALT + H ,
accédez aux différents liens en frappant K ou MAJ + ALT + K.

Revenez à la page d'accueil ou au plan du site en frappant la touche M.

Pour les visiteurs Windowsiens :
Si vous utilisez le lecteur d'écran NVDA, frappez la touche H pour accéder aux titres des articles ou Touche-NVDA + F7, puis T pour accéder aux titres des articles. Frappez la touche K ou Touche-NVDA + F7, puis N pour accéder aux différents liens.
