Start - stop AccessDV Linux

First of all, take a good look at your computer. When it starts, is there an indication, for example F2, F8, F12 or other, to choose the starting method ? There is often the word "boot" in this case.

If this indication does not appear, you must go and modify the BIOS so that the computer starts on the key. If you don’t know how to do it, ask your friends who know about it for help, or at : équipe-advl@laposte.net

Le GRUB

1 - Your computer must be shut down.
2 - Insert the ADVL key
3 - Make sure that the computer starts on the key, it is essential.
4 - The ADVL window appears.

5 - By default the identifier is Accessdvlinux. If you have another one, you must choose yours.
6 - Type the password : you only see chips.
7 - Confirm with the key : Enter.

To close ADVL, press : WIN + Q

Display of files, in list

To make navigation easier, it is important to present your personal file in list form. Here’s how to do it :

With CTRL + WIN + F1, launch the main menu.

- Use the Down Arrow key to scroll down until you hear : parameter-menu.
- With Right Arrow once then Down Arrow go down to : File manager.
- Confirm with the Enter key.
- You are now on the tab : Display.
- TAB once and display one of the following two lines : compact list view, detailed list view.
- Confirm your choice with the Spacebar key

Computer search engine

1 - Launch the Whisker menu by pressing : CAPITAL + WIN + F1. You hear : Whisker menu.
2 - Type the word : recherche, ORCA reads all letters.
3 - Confirm with Enter, you will reach the entry field of the Cat-fish software.
4 - Type the word you are looking for and do not validate.
5 - TAB twice and hit the space bar. This opens a drop-down list that
allows you to choose, with Down Arrow, the folder in which you are looking.
6 - TAB again and validate. A list of answers is displayed.
7 - Navigate in the list with Down Arrow or Up Arrow.
8 - Confirm with Enter when you have found what you are looking for.

Note : In the input field, you can put :
- or a word : status, letter, report, etc.
- or a wildcard, for example :
*.jpg if you are looking for all images in jpg
*.png if you are looking for all png images
*pps if you are looking for a slideshow in pps etc.

It is about taking a picture of the computer screen.
1 - Do : SHIFT + WIN + F1. You hear : menu Whisker
2 - Write the word : capture. Orca reads all the letters.
3 - Confirm with Alt + V.
4 - A window opens. With Up Arrow or Down Arrow, choose : tout l’écran
5 - Confirm with Alt + V.

6 - A window opens. With Up Arrow or Down Arrow, choose to save it.
7 - Confirm with Alt + V.
8 - You are offered to save the image on the desktop.
Don’t forget to give this image a name, for example : capture-1.png,
The indication .png is important.
7 - Confirm with Enter.
Then the image is on the desktop, you can store it in another folder.

Favorite applications

It is important to set up your favorite applications correctly. We only do it once.
- Do : CTRL + SHIFT + F, you hear : applications favorites, internet onglet de page.

there are two tabs : internet and utilities. You switch from one to the other with Right Arrow or Left Arrow.
You reach the tab : Internet.

  • For the browser, take Mozilla Firefox
  • For the email client, take Thunderbird
    .
    With the tab : utilities, and the TAB key, make sure you hear two things : Gestionnaire de fichiers et Emulateur de Terminal .
  • For the file manager, take CAJA file manager
  • and for the terminal emulator, take Terminal Xfce.

Close everything with : ALT + F4.


The keyboard

The keyboard in learning mode :

To know more about the keys on the keyboard you can put ORCA in
learning. To do this do : INSERT + H . To disable the learning mode,
do : ESCAP .

This is particularly useful for learning about the functions of the disabled numeric keypad.

The numeric keypad is disabled
With the numeric keypad disabled, you can use :

  • the Plus key to read a text with ORCA
  • keys 1 - 2 - 4 - 4 - 6 - 6 - 7 - 8 as direction keys,
  • key 9 for fast ascent,
  • key 3 for fast descent,
  • the slash key to simulate a left click, or double-click,
  • the asterisk key to simulate a right click

Internet connection

The best way to connect to the Internet is to use the Ethernet cable : the speed is more stable. Simply plugging in this cable gives the connection.

The WIFI connection is less stable, sometimes offering only 30% of the speed, or even less. It is only possible if your computer has a WIFI card.

- 1 - Locate, on your box, the name of the box, for example : Livebox 45JK7
- 2 - Copy the security key (for Orange) - or the Network Key (for Free) or follow the instructions of your service provider.
- 3 - Launch the network connection menu by pressing : CTRL + 9 of the activated numeric keypad

- 4 - With Down Arrow scroll down until you hear the name of your box, if at least the screen reader is active.

- 5 - Press the Enter key on the keyboard
- 6 - You are now in an entry field where you can copy the security key from the box or the network key.
- 7 - Tab until you hear : e connecter
- 8 - Confirm with the Enter key on the keyboard.

If the WIFI connection is insufficient, it can be improved by using the PLC (Power Line Carrier) technique or a Wifi repeater.

Caja, Thunar, Nautilus, Nemo file managers

Thunar or Caja ?

Thunar is very good for the visually impaired because he is less loaded with information.
Caja is better for the blind because it is vocalized.

Thunar has some interesting’personalised actions’.

Caja can use custom actions, thanks to the tool : scripts.

Nautilus and Nemo are other file managers. They allow for a
further customization of folders and files. This concerns the visually impaired.

Interesting : there are folders or files that do not open with Thunar and open with Nautilus. Concretely : launch Nautilus first, then go play in the folder-files area.

List or icon display ?

It depends on the person’s visual field, his or her visual strategy. That’s why AccessDV Linux gives users a choice.


Caja - Discovery

Launch Caja by doing WIN + Apostrophe - Enlarge the window with : ALT + F10

We see, from top to bottom :

  • - The Title Bar
  • - the Menu Bar : File, Edit, Display, Go to, Bookmarks, Help
  • - the Main Toolbar..... inaccessible to the blind.
  • - on the left the Side Panel, or shortcut area, activate and deactivate with the F9 key
  • - on the right the Location Bar above the file folder area
  • - the Status Bar
  • - An additional panel can be created with the F3 key.
  • - you can Display hidden files by pressing : CTRL + H
  • - the Zoom is done with : CTRL + + + or CTRL + -
  • - Switch from the shortcut area to the file folder area with F6
  • - we move in these areas with Up Arrow or Down Arrow
  • - we go back to the parent folder with : ALT + Up Arrow

- To rename a folder or file : F2 key
- To search for a folder or file : CTRL + F
- To exit Caja, press : ALT + F4 or CTRL + W


Navigate with Caja in folders and files

WIN + apostrophe to launch Caja. We hear : the name of your personal folder frame - and Tableau arborescent.. You are in your personal file, which can be called Pierre, MarieJo, company, etc.

The window has two main areas : the shortcut area and the
file-files. You switch from one to the other with the F6 key. We navigate through each area with the direction arrows.

When you are in the folder-files area :
- we navigate in the area with the direction arrows
- open a folder with Space or Enter
- we go up in the tree structure with : ALT + Left arrow
We close the windows by doing : ALT + F4 or CTRL + W


Caja - customized actions

Caja does not have Thunar’s custom actions but they can be used when even, thanks to the tool : scripts.

In Caja, select a file
open the context menu by pressing the MENU key on the keyboard or by Shift + F10 or by pressing the asterisk key on the deactivated numeric keypad
go down with the Down Arrow until you hear : scripts
do Right Arrow once, then go down with the Down Arrow until you hear : actions personnalisées Thunar

Actions personnalisées

do Right Arrow once, then go down with the Down Arrow until you hear, for example : Modifier image
press the ENTER key on the keyboard
with Down Arrow scroll down, for example, until you hear : redimensionner the image

Modifier l’image

tick with Space Bar. We mean : taille de l’image.
we have a window in which we can type directly, by
example, 100x100 or 150x150 or 250x250 etc.
Confirm with ENTER.

Then the modified image is placed with a new name in the original folder.


Caja, preferences

WIN + Apostrophe : launch Caja,
ALT + F10 : enlarge the window, (ALT + F5 to re-diminish it)
ALT + A : go to the display menu, to choose : icons, list or compact,
ALT + Up or Down arrow : Navigate through the list of folders and files,
ALT + F4 : Close Caja (as CTRL + W),

F2 : rename a folder or file,
F3 : create an additional panel,

F6 : Switch between the shortcut area and the file folder area,
F9 : Open/close the side panel (shortcut area),

CTRL + Plus or Dash : Enlarge or reduce the text size,
CTRL + H : display hidden files,
CTRL + F : search,
CTRL + W : close Caja. (or ALT + F4)


Caja, bars and zones

- top : the title bar
- at the top, just below the title bar : the menu bar, File, Edit, Display, Go to, Bookmarks, Help.
- at the top, just below the menu bar : the toolbar.
- at the top left : the shortcut and bookmark bar.
- at the top, a little to the right : the location bar, below the toolbar.
- at the bottom : the status bar.

- on the left : the shortcuts and bookmarks area.
- on the right : the folder and file area.

You switch from one zone to another with the F6 key
You can navigate in each area with Up Arrow or Down Arrow

CAJA is closed with CTRL + W or with ALT + F4

Caja, the windows

Act on the windows :
ALT+F4 : Close the window
ALT + Click : Move the window
ALT + Right-click : Resize the window
ALT + F10 : Maximize window
ALT + F5 : Minimize the window.
CLICK-Right : Launch context menu.

The bookmarks :

you can make custom bookmarks in the left side panel.
1 - Go to a folder for example : Dropbox.
3 - Start the Bookmarks menu, by pressing Alt + S and confirm with Enter.

Personalized actions

Caja does not have the custom actions of Thunar but you can use them anyway, thanks to the tool : scripts.

- in Caja, select a file
- open the context menu by pressing the MENU key on the keyboard or by SHIFT + F10 - scroll down with the Down Arrow until you hear : scripts
- do Right Arrow once, then go down with the Down Arrow until you hear : custom Thunar actions


Caja : default launch

By default, it is the file manager, Thunar, that opens with AccessDV Linux.

For the blind it is better to use Caja, which is more vocal than Thunar. Here is the procedure :

1 - Do : CTRL + SHIFT + G to open the tilting tool.
2 - Confirm with the Spacebar.
3 - Tap the Space Bar once to select Caja.
4 - TAB until you hear : apply-button.
5 - Confirm with the Enter key on the numeric keypad.
6 - TAB until you hear : close the button.
7 - Confirm with the Enter key on the numeric keypad.

CAJA is recognized because, in the menu bar, there is the word : bookmarks.


CAJA, the menu : Aller à, Go to

CAJA is launched with : WIN + Apostrophe - launch the menu "Go to" with : ALT + L
ALT + L : launches the "Go to" menu - then, with Down Arrow you go to Personal Folder
Open the personal folder with Enter
You can navigate with Down Arrow or Up Arrow

ALT + L returns to the "Go to" menu - then, with Down Arrow you go down to Workstation
The Workstation is opened with Input
This allows you to open the other partitions in the computer.

ALT + L returns to the "Go to" menu - then, with Down Arrow you go down to Network
You can browse the network with Down Arrow or Up Arrow

ALT + L returns to the "Go to" menu - then, with Down Arrow you go down to Search
Confirm with Enter
Enter a word : report, letter, pdf, text, and validate with : Entry
We browse the list with Down Arrow or Up Arrow

ALT + L returns to the "Go to" menu - then, with Down Arrow you can clear the history of the visited locations.


CAJA, the menu : Display, Affichage

CAJA is launched with : WIN + Apostrophe - launch the "Display" menu with : ALT + A .

ALT + A : launches the "Display" menu - then, with Down Arrow you go down to Toolbar .
You can check or uncheck this bar with Space .

The same can be done with the other bars :

  • Side panel,
  • Location bar,
  • Status bar,
  • Additional panel .

ALT + A returns to the "Display" menu - with Down Arrow you go down to Arrange items.
With Right Arrow once, then Down Arrow, you can choose to sort by name, size, type, date of modification.
Confirm with Space.

ALT + A returns to the "Display" menu - then, with Down Arrow you go down to Zoom .
ALT + A returns to the "Display" menu - then, with Down Arrow, you go down to select whether you want CAJA to present the folders and files as icons, lists or compact. Confirm with Space.


Create a folder :

1 - Launch Caja by doing : WIN + apostrophe .
2 - With the Down Arrow key, scroll down to the desired folder and confirm with Enter.
3 - Click on the word : File or do it : ALT + F and confirm with Enter.
4 - With Down Arrow, scroll to the 3rd line : Create a folder.
5 - Confirm with Enter.
6 - You are asked for the name of the new folder.

Enter the name of the new folder and confirm with Enter.
It’s okay, the folder is created.

Delete a folder or file :

1 - Launch Caja by doing : WIN + apostrophe .
- With Down Arrow, scroll to the folder or file to delete.
3 - Press the DELETE key on the keyboard.
4 - Then the deleted item is moved to the Trash.
5 - If you have made a mistake, you can go to the Trash, right-click (or SHIFT + F10) on the element deleted by mistake, and choose : Restore.


Caja - rename a folder or file

1- Do : WIN + apostrophe to launch Caja.
2 - Go to the folder or file you want to rename. Do not validate !
3 - Right-click or Shift + F10 on this folder or file . A list of tasks is displayed.
4 - Go down with the Down Arrow until you hear : Rename.
5 - Confirm with Enter. Then the name of the folder or file is selected.
6- Enter the new name
7 - Confirm with Enter.
The file is renamed, it is stored among the other files in alphabetical order

CAUTION :

avoid accented letters
Avoid spaces, replace them with a dash of 6 or 8.
